Thomas Mason Sir

Son of John Mason, builder, and born at Airdrie in 1844, the late Lord Dean of Guild was educated at Anderson's Academy in Glasgow.  In his seventeenth year he was a journeyman mason, and he was engaged in railway construction, latterly as manager, for 13 years. Among their works are the Glasgow City Chambers, the Clyde Trust Offices, the new Glasgow Bridge, Carlisle and Paisley Station, the Coats Memorial Church Paisley, and the John Clark U.F. Church, Largs. They constructed the Canal Line, the Cathcart Railway, Craigmaddie Reservoir and Tunnels, and they raised Thirlmere Lake and made 26 miles of the Manchester Aqueduct.

Among the offices Sir Thomas has held are those of Sub-Dean of Guild, Clyde Trustee, Director of the Merchants' House, Town Councillor, and Deacon-Convener of the Trades' House. He is a Justice of the Peace and Deputy-Lieutenant of the County of the City of Glasgow. His amusements were music and curling, and he had travelled on the Continent and in Egypt and America.
